If you’re already using ChatGPT or Gemini to brainstorm ideas, organize your schedule, or generate images, you’ve won the first half of the battle. You’re using AI to be more productive — but you’re still just scratching the surface of what’s possible. It’s 2026, and simply using chatbots isn’t where the true power of AI lies. It’s time to start using AI agents to bring your ideas to life via code.

Almost a year has passed since Andrej Karpathy, a computer science PhD and a well-respected software engineer who has worked in impactful companies like Tesla and OpenAI, coined the term “vibe coding”:

Since that tweet, the landscape has shifted. The underlying models have grown significantly more capable, and the developer tools built on top of them have had time to mature. Vibe coding is no longer some gimmick or a dream of the future. It’s a viable way to bring ideas to life and ship real products, and even the pros are embracing it.

I know that coding might still sound scary (even with vibe attatched to the front), but with the right mindset, the right tools, and the combined knowledge of the world at your fingertips, it's really not as hard as it seems.

To show you what I mean, here is why I believe 2026 is the year to stop just chatting with AI and start building with it.

1. “The hottest new programming language is English” — Karpathy

The landscape of software engineering is changing, and AI is the main driving factor. Tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and Antigravity are replacing the traditional ways we build things. We’re moving away from manual line-by-line coding and moving toward “agentic workflows” — where you’re basically managing a team of AI agents to do the heavy lifting.

A radically different set of skills is needed in this new environment. It’s less about writing the code and more about steering the AI agents in the right direction. In vibe coding you are more of a project manager than a traditional software engineer. You are in charge, but the AI agents write most if not all of the code. Even pros like Karpathy, who has been an integral player in creating these very tools, are feeling behind.

If a founding member of OpenAI and former Tesla AI director feels like he has a “skill issue” because he isn’t fully utilising these new agents, it’s a clear signal to the rest of us. Software is no longer just about writing lines of code; it’s about mastering a new “programmable layer of abstraction” involving agents, prompts, and memory.

And this is where the opportunity lies. You are here, witnessing the early days of a new paradigm. If you get into this now, you will still be among the early adopters who have a chance of becoming experts in the field.

2. AI models are getting really good at coding and agentic workflows

I’ve been following AI since well before ChatGPT was even a thing, and I’ve seen it go from “bad” to “mindblowing” at a scary pace. We’ve moved past the days of AI just finishing your sentences or generating weird, pixelated images. We are now in the era of models that can answer almost any complex question, create videos that are indistinguishable from reality, and most importantly — write code that actually works.

In the early days of vibecoding, struggle and frustration were an inevitable part of the process. Models would constantly go in loops, fail to solve simple issues, and couldn’t handle tool calls or agentic workflows. But those days are behind us. Models like Claude Opus 4.5 or GPT-5.2 handle these tasks like magic. And I’m not the only one who thinks so — the developer community is seeing the same shift.

3. Vibe-coding is a great way to learn

What I find fascinating about vibe-coding is how much I actually learn in the process. I don’t necessarily know how to read every line of code, but thanks to these tools, I’ve started to understand how things actually work. I’m learning the “plumbing” of the digital world.

When you’re “in the trenches” building a project, you aren’t just copy-pasting; you’re making architectural decisions. You start to see:

How codebases are structured: You learn why a “frontend” needs to talk to a “backend” and how they stay in sync.
How to keep things secure: You start understanding things like environment variables and why you never, ever put your API keys in plain text.
The “Systems” view: You learn about networking, databases, and how information moves from a click on your screen to a server miles away.

So much of our world now runs on code. By going hands-on with a vibe-coding project, you inevitably pick up these high-level patterns. You start to understand why certain programming languages matter for certain tasks, or why a specific type of database is better for the app you’re building.

Whether you want to be a professional dev or not, this gives you a massive edge. You stop looking at technology as “magic” and start seeing it as a series of logical systems that you finally have the power to influence.

And once you feel like you understand how things work, you can build them. You can finally bring your own ideas that no one has thought of before you to reality.

4. You are getting a great deal right now

Running these large AI models isn’t cheap. Every prompt you send consumes energy and demands massive investments in the infrastructure and data centers that make it all possible. But as an end user in 2026, you’re likely getting a better deal than you realise.

Since the field is still relatively new, companies are fighting aggressively to acquire users, create a “moat,” and establish a monopoly they can capitalise on later. Because of these competitive market conditions, we’re essentially living through a “VC subsidy.” You can pay $20 for a monthly plan and easily get $200+ worth of actual computing power in return. No one knows how long this will last or when the winners will consolidate and start focusing on pure profit.

If you’re looking for a place to start, there are two tools I highly recommend:

Cursor: This is still the gold standard for many. It’s a fork of VS Code, so if you’ve ever used that, you’ll feel right at home. And if not it's a great place to start. It’s fast, handles project-wide context beautifully, and its “Composer” mode is a game-changer for multi-file edits.
Google Antigravity: This is the new heavy hitter in 2026. It’s built from the ground up for agentic workflows. Unlike a traditional editor, it allows you to spawn agents that can actually “think,” plan, and execute tasks across your terminal and browser autonomously. It’s currently in public preview, and the power you get for the price is insane.

This “Golden Age” of cheap, high-end compute is the perfect window to experiment. You’re basically using a billion-dollar supercomputer as your personal assistant for the price of a few cups of coffee.

5. Vibe-coding is the highest impact way to use AI

While generating images and responding to emails with AI is cool, I truly believe the highest impact way to use it is vibe-coding. It’s the difference between asking AI to “help you work” and asking AI to “build the tools that do the work for you.” It allows you to automate entire pipelines and build personalized tools that didn’t exist an hour ago.

Since I started vibe-coding, I’ve learned more than I ever did watching tutorials. I’ve built stuff that genuinely helps me in my day-to-day life — and when I started, I had essentially zero knowledge about how to write code.

My suggestion? Start with something small. Build a tool you actually need, and before you know it, you’ll be building things you once thought were impossible.
